I’ll never forget my friend asking me a simple question..

Can I make a little room for honesty here?

She looked me straight in the eye and I felt the mood in our favorite little coffee shop tilt. She stopped picking at her pastry and moved her coffee cup aside. And suddenly the space between our faded ceramic mugs became sacred ground. It became the place where we shattered the illusion that either of us had our lives figured out. That small space between us on an old chipped table is where our friendship became real. Where I became real.

The world around us is filtered to perfection. The pictures we post on social media are cropped so all anyone will ever see is the best smiling version of you looking carefree and happy. They don’t see the tear stained pillow, they don’t see the past due bills. And no one would ever know that sometimes you still feel just as out of place in this big world as you did when you were young.

You cannot know how desperately I want to look you in the eye and tell you that you are not alone. You are amazing and you deserve more than a facade of a life. You deserve the real honest thing.

The real, original, you, unedited, and unfiltered.

We still meet there often, in that space between. Sometimes it’s the space between lukewarm lattes or between plates of sizzling Mexican food. Sometimes it’s me all by myself in the space between breathes. No matter where the physical space is I want to be there. I want my life to be real. I want to show up in the space between, and I want to meet you there too..
